Trains & Shinkansen
Navigating Japan's legendary rail network
Japan's rail network is world-class, punctual, and extensive. The Shinkansen (bullet train) connects major cities at speeds up to 320 km/h.
The Japan Rail Pass is a cost-effective option for long-distance travel. A 7-day pass costs about ¥50,000 and covers most JR trains including most Shinkansen. Buy it BEFORE arriving in Japan — it's only available to foreign tourists and must be purchased from authorized sellers abroad.
Local trains divide into: Local (各停, Kakutei) stops at every station, Rapid (快速, Kaisoku) skips some, Express (急行, Kyuukou) skips more, Limited Express (特急, Tokkyu) requires an extra ticket.
Always use the IC card (Suica/Pasmo/Icoca) for local trains — tap in and out at the gates. You can buy and recharge them at any station's ticket machine. They work across all major rail networks in Japan.
Green Cars (first class) offer wider seats, quieter carriages, and sometimes complimentary drinks. Reserve these if you're traveling between Tokyo and Osaka during peak hours.
