About Kurama Onsen

A rustic outdoor hot spring hidden in the mountains north of Kyoto, accessible only by a scenic 30-minute Eizan train ride. The open-air wooden bath overlooks the Kibune River valley, especially beautiful in autumn when the mountainside is aflame with maple leaves. The sulfur-rich waters are said to cure fatigue and soothe the soul.

Address

Kurama Honmachi, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, 601-1111

  • Bring a small towel from your hotel (or buy one at the entrance)
  • The Kurama to Kibune hiking trail starts right at the onsen — great combo
  • The Eizan train ride through the forest is beautiful, especially in autumn
