About Gion District
Kyoto's most famous geisha district, filled with preserved wooden machiya townhouses, exclusive tea houses, and lantern-lit cobblestone streets. If you're lucky, you might spot a maiko (apprentice geisha) hurrying to an evening appointment. Hanami-koji street is the atmospheric heart of the district.

- Stay on Hanami-koji and the main streets; smaller alleys are residential
- A teahouse dinner costs ¥20,000+ per person; skip unless budget allows
- Visit in December for the Gion Odori dance performances
